Creative Play – Kids Love It!

Remember the days when kids would play outside or in their room all day long. They didn’t need video games and DVD’s to keep them occupied. They were able to play together with other children and use their imaginations! Cops and Robbers, Mother May I, and Red Rover were popular childhood games of the past, but children today have no idea what they are. But that can change. Well, you don’t need to teach your kids how to play Mother May I, unless you want to, but you can encourage creative play.

Children are naturally curious and imaginative.  They don’t need to be constantly entertained with electronic devices and structured play groups. Give a child or a group of children a few basics and let them go. They will soon find that using imagination and creating your own games is more fun than any video game!

So what should you provide? Start out with basic toys such as blocks, cars, dolls, etc. Kids will find a way to use what they have to create a world of their own. Kids also love to dress up, so provide a box of costumes or old clothes they can use.

Children will borrow ideas from what they have observed in their life. After a family vacation kids like to pretend they are camping or visiting a hotel. They may recreate their own version of an amusement park or other attractions. Kids will even recreate movies, I know of one child who built a museum in his room with his toys after watching the movie ‘Night at the Museum’.

Using the dress up clothes, you can encourage your children to act out their favorite stories.  Kids love to be on stage, performing for mom and dad. Let them create plays and little programs for you and watch with enthusiasm. Your kids will love the attention and it will encourage them to use their imaginations even more.

Invite your neighbors over for a family game night and teach the kids all the games you remember from your childhood. Involve the adults as well as the kids. You will not only encourage creative play with the kids, but give the neighbors a chance to get to know each other on a different level.

Kids don’t need to be constantly entertained. Kids can have a lot more fun playing in their make believe world than they will playing video games. After all, what will they remember when they are adults? That they beat the high score or the fun they had playing Mother May I with the neighborhood kids?
