new barbie head and body designs?

What’s with the new Barbie doll head and body molds? When did they change her? She looks like she’s 13… I really miss the grown-up looking barbie dolls that I played with in the early and mid-90’s. Now the only ones I can find like that are the more expensive collector dolls, like the new Supergirl and Batgirl dolls (at 40 bucks a pop). Do any stores have special edition dolls with the Superstar or Generation Girl head molds and curvier figures? The only special editions I’ve seen recently are Halloween dolls at Target and a Christmas box set at Sam’s, but those are both the new style barbie.

In 1998 they upgraded the body from the old style, to “Belly Button” style body. It was named BB because it had a belly button, and no Twist ‘n Turn waist, so it could wear hip hugger jeans.

In 2004 they started enlarging the heads on the playline dolls. The heads were similar to the already developed heads, just bigger.

In 2004, they also introduced the very thin “Model Muse” body strictly for collector dolls, even though in 2007 in found its way to play line dolls.

In late fall 2006, they introduced a new, shorter body about the size of vintage Francie. They also put a new set of even bigger heads on them. Here’s a comparison of the bodies:

The Belly Button body was re-introduced for 2008, with jointed arms and wrists, but with the same really big 2006 heads.

The bad news is that the only playline dolls released since 2006 with slightly normal heads are last years Top Model line. It has the Model Muse body, and has been discontinued. Amazon.com still stocks it, and close-out stores like Big Lots are just now getting in last years dolls.

I wait for sales on collector dolls, and buy older playline dolls to re-dress in new fashions. There will be a line of widely available reproduction Barbies at around $35-45, depending on the store, that start arriving this December. There will be one 70s and one 80s Superstar in it.
